Treasure FAQ:
What is Treasure?
Treasure is an online platform where people can collect and preserve rare and historic items, build an awesome collection, and comment on their collections and experiences.
Collectables are expensive, I'd love to get involved but I can't afford that.
That's why we built Treasure! On Treasure, our Users list their own Collectables and sell fractionalized "Shares" to each other, sharing the expense of collecting. You don't have to list items to buy shares, you can just start collecting. You don't have to list collectables to show them off, you can post as Display only, and still have access to a comment board for each item so all our Users can share feedback.
I'm seeing a lot about collectables lately on TV shows, auctions, museum attractions, even investment brokers, what's going on?
Collecting has always been around, this is part of how we know our history. Passion for treasured items that speak of our past can ebb and flow through changes in generations, technology, and the life cycle of economies. Today we are experiencing renewed interest in the value of collectables in preserving history, and as a store of value. At Treasure, we work to find high quality, meaningful items to help everyone in our community join the fun!
Can I make money on Treasure?
Treasure is a community of collectors, not a community of investors; if you wish to buy a collectible only to make money we have one simple suggestion, don't. That said, money could be made or lost in collectibles and as such money could be gained or lost on Treasure. The value of collectables may rise and fall with the value of money, or when the external marketplace for collectibles deems a particular item to have more value or less value in time.
Does Treasure itself increase the value of its collectibles?
No. Treasure does nothing that offers or generates a return from, or value appreciation to the listings. In addition, while inclusion on Treasure may make the collectibles on our system more accessible to some, that accessibility doesn't affect the external market value of the collectable itself. If the Users on Treasure vote to delist and sell a Collectible, they should not expect that item to achieve different pricing than other substantially similar items sold on the market at that time.
Is Treasure a part of the sharing economy?
At Treasure, we view ownership in it's component parts: possession, utility, and control. These parts of ownership are shared on Treasure. While the individual listing an item on Treasure retains possession, they share the experience of collecting and controlling the items future with those who purchase Shares, and those who purchase shares forgo physical possession with the listing user who forgoes exclusive rights and ownership.
Is it fun to collect items I don't bring home?
Many collectors find it very rewarding to buy items and preserve history without taking physical possession. For example, items are kept with services who vault collectibles, or put away in bank deposit boxes and storage facilities, or placed on loan to museums.
Are the collectibles on Treasure secure?
On Treasure, collectibles are secured by the original owners who successfully acquired and preserved each item. As a result, the collectibles on Treasure are secured in a web of locations among our community of experienced collectors. We feel these collectors have demonstrated successful stewardship, and as a result as a group we feel the collectibles on Treasure are more secure than if they were together all in one location.
Why should I care about helping to preserve historic objects?
One of the saddest phrases to a collector or curator of history is, "the object was lost to time." Experienced collectors seek out, find, identify and collect rare and historic pieces, preserving value, knowledge and culture. But, they can't buy everything. Items can be sold off and lost to history, hidden away anywhere in the world. Heirs can lose or just fail to recognize the value, and even natural disasters can wipe relics from the timeline of history. The community on Treasure contributes to preserving history and the artifacts of culture for future generations to study and enjoy.
How does Treasure set launch pricing?
When a collectable is launched on Treasure, we work to set a price based on recent public sales of the item or similar items. Treasure does not inflate the current market value.
When I buy a share on Treasure, what am I buying?
You are buying components of the ownership experience, both the experience of collecting and preserving history, and control of the item through an encumbrance which does not permit the item to be exploited, such as altered or sold, without your ownership participation as outlined in the Treasure Terms.
Can I change my mind and return shares I have purchased?
No. But you can list and sell your shares on Treasure after the initial item launch at a price another user will then pay consistent with the Treasure Terms.
How does Treasure make money?
Treasure charges both buyer fees and seller fees for transactions on our system, and participates at launch in acquiring shares of the item. This method enables Treasure to offer items at current market value instead of inflated prices to fund our operations.
Terms of service are always long and boring, do I need to read the Treasure Terms?
Yes. The Treasure Terms are the legal agreement which govern the use of our system, we require that you carefully read the Treasure Terms and require that you agree to them to use our system.
